A truly tight-knit family business
Expeditie Jaspers is a close family business and an all-round freight forwarder in IJmuiden and the surrounding area, strong in pallet transport and the transport of piece goods. Their trucks travel a great deal in the provinces of North and South Holland, but also reach the rest of the Netherlands and cross the border. Together with sons Niels and Raymon, Arjo and Marion Splinter are the driving force behind the versatile transport company. Arjo is responsible for planning, Marion for administration. Raymon and Niels are often on the road, but Raymon also handles planning, and Niels, trained as a truck mechanic, keeps the fleet in top condition alongside driving.

Expeditie Jaspers turns 90 years old this year. Arjo and Marion took over the company in 2001. In the past Arjo was required by his father to get a driving licence, and that is how he ended up behind the wheel of a truck. He has always enjoyed driving, and now he has turned his hobby into his work. When they took over they had five vehicles; now they run eighteen, tractors with trailers and box vans, and Arjo employs 25 people. He is quite proud of that. They deliver a lot of custom work, exactly what the customer asks for, and that is their strength too. Whatever cannot go along in bulk, that is what they take care of.
A passion for entrepreneurship
Having drive is important to Arjo. That, to him, is entrepreneurship and the reason he goes to work whistling every day: the passion for the trade. And of course because he employs staff, which brings responsibilities with it. He takes the time for that too, making sure everyone is in the right place. Perhaps he handles one load fewer because of it, but the result is that they are a very healthy company. Entrepreneurship gives him a lot of freedom. He gets to arrange things himself and comes into contact with many people, and through that interaction you gain new ideas and inspiration.
Constant variety
Expeditie Jaspers has no shortage of fine customers; they serve some 250 businesses. They notice that things are getting busier everywhere, but that good staff are hard to find. That means a shortage of in-house drivers, for example, and that is the gap they fill. At Expeditie Jaspers every vehicle has one fixed driver, so customers always know where they stand. They do what they say and stand behind it. If a customer has a question, they get an immediate answer, and they organise their part-loads as efficiently as possible.
Always a special request
Everything is geared towards responding quickly for customers: where others stop, they keep going. That variety is what makes the work so enjoyable for Arjo. Just when you think you have seen it all, another special request comes in. With their fleet they switch gears quickly, always with short lines, which is all the more pleasant for the customer.
Moving forward together
Because of the company’s growth, Expeditie Jaspers reached the point where they simply had to automate. They already worked with a program, but it no longer met their requirements. At first they thought of having their system upgraded, but that did not work out, so they went looking for another partner. They do a lot of custom work and different lengths, and that has to fit in a transport system and be user-friendly too. They soon found their way to FiLogic, and since January 2018 they have switched over completely, including their bookkeeping. In the long term their planning will move in as well; that is still something they are working on together. There is plenty of room for input and feedback, and they were guided well during the transition. It is good to see how they move forward together.
